GORE-TEX Experience Tour: Successful shoemaking workshop at Meindl. 250 steps to build your own GORE-TEX trekking boots

It was a once in a lifetime experience for the eight winners of the shoemaking workshop held at the Meindl facility. The workshop took place from 20 to 22 February as part of the GORE-TEX Experience Tour. The winners meticulously followed some 250 steps to put together a total of 200 individual components. After two days of arduous work they had produced their very own pair of Meindl’s popular GORE-TEX trekking boot ISLAND MFS.

The first day was spent preparing the shoe upper and the GORE-TEX lining for assembly. This involved stitching the leather pieces together, attaching the padding material and sealing the seams of the GORE-TEX lining to make them totally waterproof. This painstaking work required total concentration and a great deal of effort on the part of the participants. Help came in the form of the expert guidance of Meindl’s shoemaking specialists.

On the agenda the next day was the assembly of the boots. This involved cementing the upper to the insole – which is basically the foundation of the shoe. The bottom part of the boot was then sealed using a patented process and joined to the outsole. The participants couldn’t help but notice how much experience and expert craftsmanship went into each and every step of the process. Some of them were even somewhat in awe of the lasting machine.

At the end of the two days the eight participants from Germany, Luxemburg, Sweden and the USA were proud of what they had produced: their very own pair of Meindl ISLAND MFS boots, with their name engraved on the side. They also went home with a feeling of respect and admiration for the craftsmanship that goes into manufacturing high quality trekking boots. “If you consider the amount of work that goes into producing a pair of boots, they should really cost about €500,” Sven from Luxemburg concluded.

The shoemaking workshop held at the Meindl facility was part of the GORE-TEX Experience Tour. It gives outdoor recreation enthusiasts the opportunity to carry out various projects with experts from the professional scene. All of these projects are being publicised and accompanied on the website and the facebook page of the GORE-TEX Experience Tour. Anyone interested in taking part can also apply there.
