Ten years of sweat, exertion and elation – the GORE-TEX Transalpine-Run celebrates its anniversary

Hundreds of amateur and professional runners are exercising rigorously to get fit for 30th August 2014. This is when the starter pistol will be fired in Ruhpolding (Germany) for the jubilee edition of the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run: One of the most spectacular runs in the world is celebrating its 10th anniversary. This year’s route will take the participants through three different countries as they cross the Alps in eight days. This race is in a class of its own. Athletes looking for the adventure of a lifetime can apply for a place online at transalpine-run.com.

Magnificent scenery, outstanding sporting achievements and an atmosphere like no other – over the past ten years the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run has gained a reputation as one of the toughest races across the Alps and become a regular feature in the calendar of mountain and trail running enthusiasts.

From 30th August to 6th September the 650 participants will be following the route in the east of the Alps, pushing themselves to go beyond their limits. The starter pistol will be fired in Ruhpolding (Bavaria/Germany) and take them all the way to Sexten (Italy). 293 km and an altitude of 13,700 m add up to the ultimate sporting challenge and an unforgettable running experience. Climbing rocky paths and mountain passes that reach altitudes of up to 3,000 m will be rewarded with breath taking views across lush alpine valleys. In Sand in Taufers the athletes will need to speed up for a mountain sprint – the first sprint race in the history of the GORE-TEX®Transalpine-Run east route.

The GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run is as much a test of speed and endurance as it is a battle against the elements. The weather can change quickly and unexpectedly in any alpine environment. This can be tough on your equipment. That’s why good running shoes are paramount if you want to enjoy a pleasant running sensation – and be successful. Durably waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® running shoes are the best of companions for trail running: they keep your feet durably dry and stop them getting clammy and uncomfortable. Gore brand partners who feature GORE-TEX® shoe styles for trail running in their collections include Adidas, Asics, Brooks, Dynafit, Ecco, Hagloefs, Inov-8, La Sportiva, Mammut, Merrell, New Balance, Nike, Salomon, Saucony, Scarpa, Scott, The North Face, Viking and Vasque.

“Over the past ten years, the once almost informal race has turned into a prestigious running event that attracts athletes from all over the world, including places as far-flung asNew ZealandandArgentina,” says Jürgen Kurapkat, Public Relations Manager at W. L. Gore & Associates. “What I am particularly looking forward to at this year’s anniversary race is the moment when I see the runners crossing the finishing line and proudly holding their finisher’s t-shirts – exhausted but elated. A feeling unique to the Transalpine-Run!”

The GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run is run in teams of two. Runners start in six different team categories: Men, Women, Mixed, Master Mixed, Master Men (teams whose participants’ ages combine to 80 years or more) and Senior Master Men (teams whose participants’ ages combine to 100 years or more).  Check out our website at www.transalpine-run.com to find out more and apply for your place.
